GED Preparation and Testing

Prepare for your GED exams at SBAS
The smart way to learn, study, and prepare to pass the GED!

Program Overview

South Bay Adult School offers a free GED Preparation program to help you succeed on all four GED exams: Reasoning Through Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. The program includes instructional videos, practice lessons, workshops, assessments, and teacher support. With the Essential Education/GED Academy online curriculum, you can study anytime as long as you have internet access.

Students must study at least 5 hours per week, including a minimum of 3 hours in the on-campus GED Lab. In the lab, you’ll receive academic support to help you stay on track. Please note: This is not an online-only program.

Graduation

SBAS GED Prep students who pass all four GED exams are invited to participate in our graduation ceremony in June. Friends and family are welcome to celebrate this important achievement.

GED Test and Certification General Information

The GED is a nationally recognized test used for over 65 years to measure the skills needed for college, employment, and personal advancement. A GED certificate is generally accepted as equal to a high school diploma across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Tests are available in English and Spanish, and accommodations may be requested in advance.

The exam includes four tests: Reasoning Through Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. To pass, you must earn at least 145 on each test and an overall average score of 650.

Pre-registration is required at www.ged.com. Each test costs $41. Test-takers must be at least 18 years old and present a photo ID. South Bay Adult School is an approved GED Testing Center. For questions about the GED Test, call 1-877-392-6433.

Enrollment Process

The first step to enroll is attending an in-person Information Session and taking the CASAS test the same day. You'll learn about the High School Diploma and GED Preparation programs and have a chance to ask questions. After the session, registration, and testing, you’ll be placed on a GED pathway or meet with instructional and support staff for personalized pathway guidance. Using your CASAS Reading and Math results, our team will help determine the best pathway to your GED certification and recommend classes to support your success. Finally, you will schedule to meet your GED /HSD teacher for program orientation and take the CASAS Writing test (for GED) to officially start the program. Both programs require online study and on-campus attendance.
